If you have electronic 4x4 and the lights indicate the 4x4 is off then 4x4 is off. (The front drive axles are no longer powered). The steering will still feel heavy like 4x4 is on, but that is just the drag of the front axles shafts rotating because they are still connected to the wheels via the Automatic locking hubs.

The situation you are describing is the normal way in which autohubs lock and unlock. Reversing direction for several feet (with 4x4 off) will cause Autohubs to unlock. If 4x4 is on and you reverse direction the hubs will unlock then re-lock in the opposite direction. This is normal, you can drive with the hubs locked (and 4x4 off) without any issues other than slightly less mpg due to the additional drag on the drive line..

In order to turn 4x4 on or off so that way the lights go on or off i really need to push on the panal behind it. When i do turn 4x4 off i dont really hear any sound so im not really sure if it is going on or off. Is this a problem?

When engaging 4x4 (with hubs unlocked) you will hear several noises and feel some slight thumps as the T-Case powers up the front axle and the electronic clutch in the T-case locks. Additionally you will hear noise and slight thump of the autohubs locking in.. When you deactivate 4x4 by pushing the button the lights go off, but you will hear and feel very little change. This is because the auto hubs are still locked which means the front wheels are causing the front drive shaft to rotate. If you re-activate 4x4 with the hubs already locked you will also hear very little noise..

I don't know what you mean by pushing the panel behind it

by pushing on the panel i mean i not only have to push the button but i must push the area behind the button in order for the lights to turn on or off.

and when do the autohubs unlock again?

See my answer in post #2

Take a peek @ How 4x4 Works Its an interactive display showing step by step how a 4x4 system works..

Note: Step 5 is incorrect for Ford automatic hubs.. In order for autohubs to unlock the vehicle must reverse direction for several feet with 4x4 off.
