My 6-disc changer kept going out, so I decided to replace the head unit. The harness I purchased first didn't work with the speaker plug coming from the vehicle. So I got one that said "16 pin". I get it and there are only 9 in the plug (5 across the top and 4 across the bottom). I'm not trying to have a super awesome system or anything, just needing to know if this is the correct harness. It doesn't have a sub that I am aware of. It does have a tuner I'm the back seat area. Can someone help me out? I have a 1996 xlt awd v8

The harness you got to mate with your new hi may be the wrong one. Go back to the store you bought it from and tell them the specific male and model and trim of your truck and make sure the harness they give you matches the pin count on your hu. Then map out the wiring coming from your vehicle and splice the wires accordingly. Good luck!

Oh yeah, the extra wires and/or second plug is probably the connection for the disc changer. If you aren't running that disc changer anymore (which is outdated anyway), don't worry about them. Just make sure you map out the ones you need like the 12v, remote, speakers, etc.

Thanks guys. After I bought the one that another stereo place told me to get and it still didn't work, I wound up going to a stereo shop. The harness didn't have the blue amp wire, which I evidently needed whether I used it or not. The guy connected it to the power wire and voila, we had sound. Why none if the 3 different harnesses I bought had the wire, I can't tell ya, but it works fine. No shorts it fires lol.
