Hi, I just purchased a 1996 XLT 4x4 and I am wanting to get some more ground clearance. I would like to take it in the mud once in a while but I also want it to drive comfortably on the highway. What do you suggest? What would be the largest tires I gould fit without a lift (my wheels are 15")? If a lift is required what all would I need to get and where could I find it? Thnks for your time.

It all depends on what size tires you want to fit. 31's are the biggest you can go without a lift but sometimes even those rub. Try doing a search for tire fitment, there is a chart on some threads that say exactly what tire will fit with what lift. Welcome to the site.

Check out this thread Dead Link Removed It shows max tire sizes without lift and what size tire you can fit with a certain amout of lift.

i have the same truck, '96 xlt 4x4, mines a 4 door though(shouldnt make a difference), and i have 31's onmine with no lift, i rubbed once, but only cus i lost my line where i was going
