Hey, I'm looking into buying a D44 and 9" from a 74 Bronco. I had some other questions before I make the final "yes". Will I need new driveshafts, or will the ones on my X be fine with the new axles?

your wasting your time with a 9" and yes youll need new shafts. and get a new t case first.... then youll know how long to make your shafts.

ummmmmm........ why is he wasting his time with a 9"? it will be the same bolt pattern as the D44 (5on5.5), is slightly stronger than the 8.8, has unlimited options on gear ratio's and locker selection, has NO C-clips, (you can drive it with a broke axle), and you can get up to 40 spline axles for them. doest sound like a waste to me...if anything, he will atleast have the same bolt pattern front/rear.

What t-case would you guys suggest? and where can I find one?

yes i understand the C clip thing... but they make plenty of good retainers for the 8.8.... you can also get a wide selection of gears for the 8.8 lockers also it is a mustang rear..... and the 9" will be full size.... which means it will need trimmed down.... as far as the bolt pattern is concerned... you can get new axel shafts made for the 8.8 that will make it full size and they arent expensive... thatll make it full size to match the D44 in the front... i went through all this when i did my sas.... as far as t case is concered... thats gonna hurt ya... as far as low end for the 4.0.... and getting rid of the chain driven first gen case... id say go atlas II....

Well, buying the axles fell through do to lack of money.:( But I still need to learn everthing about the SAS.

Isn't the 9" from the EB not the full sized? I thought they went full size in the 2nd gen Bronco. Usually you can pick up the 9" for pretty cheap, so I thought it would be better to just upgrade the rear while I am at it.

Would the stock t-case work for a while? Cause I didn't really want to have to get into the t-case/engine mods just to do the SAS.

yes the stock t case will work.... but youll still need new shafts..... and then if you ever do an atlas... youll need new shafts again....

the 9" out of a early bronco will not be fullsize width, and will not need to be cut down to slap it under an X. why get all this stuff made for the 8.8, when he is/was buying the 9" and the D44 together as a pair? i guess he could sell the 9" and break even on c-clip eliminators and 5on5.5 axles, but then he will have to get all new brakes. it would just be easier/cheaper/better to use the 9" he was gonna get with the 44 to begin with...

BTW- sorry the deal fell through ahhjaws. it really was an awesome deal.

Yeah, it sucks to "think ahead" and act "grown up". I can't just buy everything I want anymore. I owe too many people money and will be renting a house here soon:(

Too bad, deals like that don't come around too often.
