I have a 98 xplorer sport and was thinking about taking apart my factory corners and clearing them out myself. Then I figured before I break them trying i would ask if anyone has done it before and how?

I would be interested in this too. How would you go about making molded colored plastic clear?

Robb

yeah and im still convinced you can take apart your tail lights somehow and clear them out. However Clear corners are only like 40 bucks shipped. It almost isnt worht the hassle to do it yourself....

I tried breaking mine once...it was pretty ugly. You could see the bulbs and stuff....It looked really ghetto....buy some. Its worth it.

i just realized i have my stock corners to mess with. Maybe ill try cutting the apart and doing what i can tomorrow, before i go for it on my tail lights. what does a new set of tail lights cost anyway incase i ruin mine?

The reason I asked was because I'm a student at FIU and I've seen a couple of xplorers that had them cleared out and it looks nice. If I don't have to spend the fourty bucks its better for me

If your serious about making your X look nice then don't risk clearing them out yourself. Trust me. I got a pair of clears and its totally worth the 40 bucks. they are made really well.

before explorer underground disappeared, there was a guy over there who did it and did a write up about it. in the end he said if he could go back in time, he wouldnt have wasted his time, and just bought em for $50. this was a while ago, so i dont remember exactly what he did or how he did it, but i remember reading it, thinking to myself, 'geez, what a PITA; id rather just pay $50 for em.'

has anyone else's clear corners started to yellow a bit? very annoying...not excessively bad now, but it is noticeable when you compare them to the actual headlamps

Yes. mine are getting yellowed and I HATE IT. I thought mine were like that because i had to pour rubbing alcohol in it to get out the water since the damn things fogged up. I think it would actually look BETTER to make your own clears. Eh, rant rant ***** moan complain. Stupid clears, blah. Someone make me some better ones and i'll give you one of these cool orange tic tacs i'm eating.

Yeah my passenger side corner is yellowing

clear tails

Eventhough this is out of the topic I was told to use turpentine to take out the color in the taillights to make them clear. Im trying to find one for really cheap so i can try it and not mess up my own

I thought about that til i realized i don't like all clear tails. I just tinted mine. I like it, i think i might make them even darker so they look black.

i would like to "remove" the orange from the rears, so it will be:

james, i have exactly those in my basement! but i'm gonna wreck em and make them flamed and mostly all red.

exactly what i want too....
expo5.0, how'd you do it?

i bought clears from a fellow explorer forum member and painted them with testors translucent candy apple red and testors clear coat. they look really good! but i need to go back out in the garage and do a little more wet sanding to get them perfect (the clear coat just dried a few minutes ago) also, i ended up not going with the flames. i had a short talk with my brother's girlfriends Dad (the local sherriff) and he gave me his blessing for all red with a clear box for the back-up light or all red and for batman logoed auxiliary back-up lights, but he said that the flames would most likely land me in trouble so i ended up doing all red with a clear back-up square. They look really clean and i think they will really clean up the rear end and side view of my x. i love mods that look like they are stock unless my truck is sitting next to another explorer but next to a stocker they make it look better not just covered in extra stuff. this is definitely another one of those types of mods.

Does anybody have that link to the write up on how to make your own clears?

I'd like to take the amber out of the tail lights on my 944. And no body makes clears for that... nor should they.

And I think this may be the only way.

TIA

yea, taste and subtly reign supreme in my modding mind
