I'm wondering if anyone has tried or heard anything about the results of using a programmer on a v6 explorer? I can't imagine they do very much, but would they be worth the money?

SCT XCal 3 from Henson Performance. 10-15 Hp gain max...small but it is something. I used one on my 04 but the main purpose of it was to be able to recalibrate the speedometer/trans shift pattern for larger tires and higher ratio axle gears.
I got a SCT X3 programmer with a BamaChips Tune by Doug Studdard. Honestly I was expecting a little more for the 360.00 price. the advertised HP Gain was 15-25HP. which you should feel just a little, I didnt feel anything different. I called BamaChips to get the downlow on the tunes I had. Doug Studdard informed me I would only Gain 8-12HP and 15-20ft/lb of torque. I can feel a considerable difference when I'm towing my 14' trailer with (4) Quads on it.
Superchips 1865 gives 9hp and 14tq with the 87 octane flash on a stock setup plus it still works with a CAI and cat-back exhaust. It can also be purchased for a better deal than a Bamachips tune. The 1865 comes installed with 5 different selectable tunes.
