Do you have a FAN CLUTCH recommendation?...or comments?

different cars use different fans. Our 2007 Suburban has two large electric fans. They can be loud on high but not as loud as the Explorer fan. Our 2002 Suburban had a large clutch fan. It rarely roared. Chevy used a Thermostatic Centrifugal clutch for the fan. Below 1,000 rpm fan is on and above 1,000 it disengaged unless there was too much heat from the condenser and radiator. It always kept the AC nice and cool on hot Texas days. The clutch also did not require run time to settle out like these Ford clutches. It's just about design. Chevy used a better design apparently.

So maybe someone can fit a 2002 Suburban fan clutch to an Explorer. This way start up roar is gone and fan is always on under 1,000 rpm great for traffic & AC.

Already have my EPA licenses to buy R12 and R22, so if they restrict R134a in the future I should be covered.

I went to Sam's Club and bought a 30 lb cylinder for about $65. That should be a lifetime supply for me. Get it while it's cheap.

What brand? I only use DuPont SUVA.

Drastic price differences:

$199 at OReilly's http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/FRE1/R134A30/N1783.oap

$120 on EBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/301239437946

Edit Add:

Found yours, it's Johnsons (should have known since Walmart sells Johnson's cans)

I believe Explorers come stock with the HD model, all I see are HD models offered by RockAuto.

I'm trying to get to the bottom of this too... Is there such thing as a "Standard Duty" fan clutch for the 3rd gen Explorers? Or, are they all "Heavy Duty"? I think I just want to put back in the equivalent Duty to what I'm discarding and wonder who, besides Motorcraft, makes the equivalent fan clutch. Anyone got a part number and manufacturer?

The Motorcraft YB-623 crosses over to a severe duty at NAPA (271358) which should be Murray/4Seasons.

These engines/engine bays produce/retain heat. I wouldn't be surprised that it's a "severe duty." That and for towing.

PS, it's about time you reclaimed your thread. Keep us on topic!

I would just get the Motorcraft or the 4Seasons. None of the options have a LLT warranty.

On the other hand OReilly's has a Murray for $54.99 with a LLT.

Hayden is a four seasons company, so I suspect they are the same fan clutch.

So far...it looks like everyone is coming up with "Severe Duty" for the part. Anyone else think the vehicle comes from the factory with either "Standard" or "Heavy" duty. My rig was has the factory tow package but I doubt they would have distinguished a tow vs non-tow to determine which engine gets what fan clutch.

The thicker/more robust the fan clutch, the heavier duty they are. So if your OE one looks just like the aftermarket, it's because they are the same. If the after market was beefier or smaller, then you'd know they were different.

AFAIK, all 2002-2005 explorers came with severe duty....

Thanks everyone. I went with a South Korean made product that is severe duty. I have not installed it yet so do not know yet how it compares to the factory original.
