Does ignition module give a code

92 Ranger
Our 92 Ranger is running roughly and it is most noticeable in 5th gear. I put a code reader on it and got a 116 code so I replaced the coolant temperature sensor. We had a similar problem at the first of the year and it turned out to be the distributor. I didn't get any code other than the 116 so I'm wondering if the module in the distributor even gives out a code if it is bad. The plugs and wires only have about 14,000 miles on them.

What engine? I'm guessing it is something other than the 4.0, since the 4.0 is a distributerless system.

Yes, the ICM can trigger a trouble code. When my TFI module would act up on my BII, it would throw CM 14 and/or 18. There are 3 digit equivalents for these codes as well (211, 212, 214 for example). As with most codes, the code itself won't be enough information to determine if the ICM has failed or if the fault is in some other part of the circuit.
 






It's the 3.0 liter. Is that module hard to replace? I've never dug into the distributor.

I don't know. On my 2.9, the distributor was on the back of the motor, and the TFI module was on the back of the distributor. So, in situ, it was kind of irritating to replace because you are working right up against the firewall there. It seems like there's only one bolt holding it on, and I wouldn't call it difficult to replace once you have access to it. If you replace it, make sure you put plenty of the dielectric grease on it to dissipate the heat. Heat is what kills these.
