1998 Mercury Mountaineer
How are you all today? The reason I'm asking this question is because I'm looking for a transmission for a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer. I'm being told that the 98 Ford Explorer is the enter change for the 98 Mercury Mountaineer. I found that not to be true. The 98 Ford Explorer has a 4.0 Engine with the start mother and Oil filter on different sides than the 98 Mountaineer. But I was in the Junk Yard look at the 96-97 Ford Explorer and these two have the same mother as the 98 Mountaineer, and the starter/ Oil filter are on the same sides as the 98 Mountaineer.

The V6 5R55E trans you have is a decent middle strength trans, if not stressed with towing, or neglected.

Unfortunately the 1997 version is different and not worth any attention. Owners of that 97 5R have to deal with that specific model, swapping to any other year 5R is a bad decision. Ford had different wiring and sensors(1 or 2) on that and it is not compatible with any other model wiring/PCM. The 96 trans will be a 4R44E, and it looks the same as the 5R, but again slight changes make it not smart to attempt to use them in anything but the same model it came from.

So for your 98 trans, hunt a 98-01 as a good match, those had no basic changes among them, besides slight internal VB items. But the computer control and all functions match perfectly for the 98-01 V6 Explorers. Regards,
