Removed the transfer case from my good (better anyway) 1993 A4LD and upon separation from the transmission lots of transmission fluid came out of the back end of the A4LD. As per the Haynes manual instructions I had not yet drained the transmission fluid. I had already drained the transfer case a few days before.

A friend mentioned that no fluid should have come out of the transmission (is that correct?) and that I probably need a rear seal. As long as the gasket between the A4LD and the transfer case is good (I'm trying to find a new gasket; seems like I might need to go to Ford for this), does it matter if the rear seal is good? No fluid had leaked out prior to separation.

There is no rear seal on the 4x4. There is a drainback hole in the extension housing.. perhaps that was plugged.
