after driving my explorer with a noise on the wheels and when i got to 60 or higher the steering wheel plus the middle console where the cd changer is located would shake so much that my cd would skip. well i took it to this mechanic (a friend of my mother) he drove it and took the back wheels and axle and found that the bearings were messed up so he is charging $450  the replace the two bearings from the axle and the two from the wheels does that price sound good?

That sounds a bit high. Always get a second opinion from a different shop, and see if they tell you the same thing is broken.....

yeah that`s true it is very high !

Hey ghost:

Your driving a 97??? How many miles are on it?? Im surprised that you need wheel bearings so soon. But if it fixes the shake....

JD;)

I had the exact problem you describe and a simple balance and alignment solved the problem. I'd get a second opinion.
