still looking
Hello all, I'm new to the forum and the genre (normally I stick with trucks) I am starting to look for an explorer but I need to know some specifics first.
Ideally I would like a V8, 4WD, manual transmission - was this combo ever available?
If yes what year would be best to look for?
If no then what would be the best combination and year to look for instead?

No it never existed.

What year range are you looking for? 5.0L? 4.6L?

To expand on Section's questions since you may not be familiar, the 5.0L was only available from '96-'01 in the Gen II:

The 4.6L V8 was offered in the Gen III+ from 2002 on...

I guess that would put me in the '01 and earlier range

Good choice... :D

So I'm looking for a '01 or later with 4WD. Manual is out of the question with the V8? Did they make a manual 4x4 V6 setup?

Eventually (like years from now) this rig will get re-purposed with a late 40's or early 50's Ford F-1 truck body

The 5.0 Explorer/Mountaineer were manufactured as either a 2 wheel drive or an All Wheel Drive, all had automatic transmissions. The All Wheel Drive is similar to having the truck in 4 hi all the time, but the power is actually somewhere around 35/65 split front to rear, unless the rears slip. The power would be increased to the front. No driver input or control of this system.

The 6 cylinder models have an Auto 4WD system. This system senses wheel slip (when in auto) and engages/disengages the front driveshaft as needed. Has the ability of selecting (via dash mounted switch) to 4hi and 4LO.
There were some manual transmission units made, i think most were the sport model.

Perhaps you would enjoy reading this thread. A member of this forum is combining a 50 Ford truck and his explorer.
