A few days ago our X has started issues.. (only 12k on this tranny)...

1st issue: When cold and in DRive or OD it will stay in 1st gear. I can manually shift it to 2nd gear, but if I put it back into drive (after I manually put it into 2nd gear) it goes back into first. Once the motor is warmed up, I don't have this issue anymore (I only have to drive a few miles for it to fix itself)

2nd issue: I haven't completly issolated exactly when, but quite often the truck will start out in 2nd gear. It seems to be that if I slowly roll to a stop (at a light) that it is fine (starts in first), but if I stop quickly (at a light) it will then be in 2nd gear. When it starts in 2nd gear, I can manually put it into 1st then all is fine (put it in first, then drive). If I don't manually put it in first it will start in 2nd gear and once I get up to 10mph or so (I think its rpm related.. about 2500 rpms) it feels like it shifts to first, then all the rest of the shifting is fine (it goes up to 2,3, od locket etc).

From my searching, the first symptom sounds like the Speed govenor is sticking, but I have only found one thread for the 2nd symptom but I it didn't really have a solution.

Mark,

your second symptom could be the govenor also.

Starts up in second (or third) from my ATSG:

-Improper band and or clutch application
-Damaged or worn govenor
-sticking govenor
-Loose Valve body
-Dirty or ticking valves
-cross leaks between VB and case(seperator plate gasket)

So yea it could be the govenor.

FYI- the Superior shift kit includes a small anti stick spring for the speed govenor. I dont know if you need the rest of the kit since its 40 bucks or so.

If you can find a selection of springs you may be able to find one that you could use- its a fine wire low pressure spring- just enough tension to move the weight of the valve. It goes in the gov. body and then the valve , then the existing spring and the weight.

UPDATE:

UPDATE:..

On Saturday I pulled the transfercase so I could get to the speed governor(sp?).. I had the X on a lift so I could get to it without removing the tail shaft assembly...

When I first started looking at the govenor, it didn't seem bad. Then I figured out that there was a small piece (piston looking thing) that was supposed to move. It was really really really stuck.. I had to push on it hard to make it move. I cleaned all the gook off of it, lightly hit it with the emory (sp) cloth, and soaked it in atf, then put it back in.

Now the truck shifts out of first great. I've only felt it not go into first at a stop twice and both times I didn't really stop. I did a California stop (roll) and it felt like it could have gone into first, but didn't need to. It seems to go into first every time I stop.

I did notice that the fluid was brown (not burnt, but really dark dark red/brown). When I was taking down the xfer case I noticed that both of my breather lines were missing (and I drive on dirt roads every day)..

when I got done I changed my external tranny filter, and swapped 3 gallons (yes, gallons) of tranny fluid. This weekend I'll change out the internal filter and flush it again with 3 gallons of fluid (its on sale at walmart for $4.50 a gallon).

Just figure I'd post an update....
