I have the P0401 code popping up and i know that 90% of the time it is the DPFE. Could this be the cause of my poor gas milage? Should i change this thing Now or can it waite a whille?

What is a DPFE? Where is it located? I haven't gotten that code...yet. I have gotten the P0420 code for the catalytic system effieincy - joy. I replaced the rear o2 sensor - hopefully that's it.

Thanks for the info.

Im not sure exactly what it is but it is located on the left side of the engine near the top. It connects to the EGR valve. When mine went bad it really screwed my milage up. I only got 280k off of a tank of gas.

DPFE = a differential pressure switch that senses diff/press across an orifice that when a setpoint it reached, sends a signal that transmits vacuum to the EGR valve to open it for exhaust gas recirculation. Lots of indications that these can go bad on certain Ford models. I am struggling with the dealer over a repeatedly bad DPFE sensor on my Focus.

ONLY 280k?? Man, I usually run a couple hundred mile!!;)

I think my dpfe need replacing also, but I contacted Ford Parts Network, and through them it is a $100 part! Not what I was wanting to pay....

when i got mine it was $130 canadian. It is very easy to change yourself so no worries about labour.

wow. I just contacted fordpartsnetwork for mine and they said $59.99 + $7 freight.
Part number F77Z-9J460-AB
I do have a different year than you but i cant see it being such a difference.
I also contacted my ford dealler and they were $10 more putting my total to $80.58. Im going with fordpartsnetwork..

Yeah, $60 is what I was expecting to pay, but I think on the later models the dpfe is more plastic, and the earlier models its all metal. Still a big price difference though....

I didn't notice any drop in mileage when mine was bad.

My new one was only $55 at Autozone. They sold me the wrong one first, I had to get them to look up the part number of the one on my truck. For some reason its different from what they have listed for 95's.

Hey Caleb, I replaced mine from a metal version to a plastic version. They're basically the same thing. I asked the lady at the counter about it and she told me it's the same. Plugged the new one in and my CEL turned off so that fixed the problem. :D

Double post...sorry.

i was getting around 16mpg then my check engine light came on. it started to get cold outside and MPG dropped to 12.5 around city. i came to the boards and looked around and people say change the DPFE sensor. well i tried to drill out the pop rivots and clean the old DPFE....it worked for about 2 weeks then the CEL came on again.

i got out there with a multimeter and vaccum pump and tried to run all the tests on the egr system.....tests results were inconclusive though, so i just went up to autozone and picked up a new DPFE for 55$. as of jan 3 2003, 6 days later, no CEL....for now.

I saw an episode of 2 guys garage where they had an explorer on the rack. It had EGR codes and they said to remember to take off the throttle body and clean both sides very well. They showed the back side and it was all carbon'd up.

Here is the URL for that episode

I just got the light today and it is for 335 and 332.

I intend to replace the DPFE and associated hoses, the EGR valve and take the TB off and clean it too.

I suggest we all not overlook the backside of the TB!

Mine just started registering the P0401 code and my MPG actually went up from about 14 to about 16.

i had mine replaced before i got my code reader and they said the plastic model is an upgrade over the metal one because of the reaction and all the crud that builds up on the metal one.... it was bout a 60 dollar part as i remember it...
