I have a 96 sport with a 5 speed tranny. Its hard to shift into first gear when in neutral and i get a grinding noise when i go into reverse. I am pretty sure that for some reason the clutch is draging. Just wondering how hard it is to but a new clutch in explorers. Can it be done in a driveway or should i take it somewhere and have it done. Thanks for any advice!

Sounds like you and I have the same problem....

yep same problem here ... and when I get it in first if I am on level ground it will creep forward let me know if you replaced it and how hard it was

The problem may not be the clutch at all. The problem might be the slave cylinder. They go bad quite frequently in fords. I dont know how to change it but that is what i have heard from several people including the dealer after i had the clutch replaced.

the slave on the explorers is internal... so to get it replaced its probably best to throw in a new clutch and bearings also..... while you are in there anywyas

The slave cylinder going bad is common, it's not to hard to do the clutch it doesnt take any special tools other than the clutch line removal tool and thats like 4 bucks. I've had my transmission out a couple of times for various reasons i can get it out myself in about 3 hours and back in, in about 4.

Don't know what the problem or the solution is but I just replaced my clutch and it is not to bad of a project. You have to remove the exhaust, then the crossmember, then drain the tranny, then remove the tranny. Took me a weekend to do it but now that I have done it once I am sure I could and probably will need to do it again I could do it in a few hours. (My problem is still not fixed) I have a 99 and I was getting a squeaking noise when I would engage the clutch and starting having some real trouble getting the vehical in gear so I bought a Clutch kit (Preassure plate, clutch plate, and Throwout bearing) Replaced it and the problem went away.. Although I have a new problem now.
