Hi all,

Just got this 17 Explorer Sport a week and a half ago and 3 days ago it started to make this noise. (See video) however, it does not do it every time. It's sporadic. It has 90k on the odo. Any other things to check first? Or just prepare for the phasers?

Thank you.

Next time it sits for a while try this:
Hold brake pedal and gas pedal at same time. Push the start button and let it crank for 5 seconds. This wont allow the car to start but it should prime the cams with oil. Start as normally right after doing this and see if sound changes at all.

Thank you for the response. I will definitely give that a try.

Sounds like my 2016 Sport. It was the cam phasers. Dealer replaced both phasers, 1 tensioner. I had ESP so I paid only my deductible. I did have them replace the water pump since front cover was off. There was no additional labor, just the cost of the water pump. It was long process since Ford wanted pictures and mechanic's narrative prior authorize warranty repair. Ford told them what to replace.

Sounds just like my 2013 3.5 liter. It just recently jumped time and needs phasers and timing chain at 198k miles. I took in to shop in December and they drove it and said it was operating within specifications. The rattle was the initial indicator around Thanksgiving. Don’t delay on getting it taken care of. Last weekend the check engine light came on, and voila we’re into 5-6k repair.

Well, I hope both the people you quoted got it figured out 2-2.5 years ago when they first posted.

Also to add, my 14 Sport was doing something similar and I also had a check engine light for cam timing. I did some live data viewing and could see one of the cams moving around a lot compared to the others. I did a timing chain, tensioners and water pump, didn't touch the phasers and that solved my issue.
