hey tarron arent there mounts on the bottom too, or are the mounts on the side the only thing holding it on.

OK, just went out and checked the X. I have two grommets on the mount where the bottom of the air box sat (inside towards the engine). There may have been a part of the air box that went into one of the holes on the fender but once the bottom was loose it came out easily. I wish I could remember where I put the air box cause then I could post a picture of it.

After reading this post (my EX has a conical filter), I already had the conical filter from a 5.0:L Mustang that I chopped a bit of the end off to fit in my air-box, so I just ripped out the bottom portion of the air-box (it comes off its mounts very easily), squeezed the clamp in a bit with a pair of plyers so that it would keep the filter in, and then put the filter on what was left of the box, put on the clamp and now it sits on the mounts where the air-box used to be. I also unhooked the battery for about 1/2 an hour to clear things out, took it for a spin and it seems to have more "pull" to it, especially with a drop from 3rd to 1st :).

What about the air intake hole on the bottom portion of the airbox? I read somewhere that if you drill holes into the airbox, that this intake hole needs to be covered up for some reason. Is this true? or can the intake hole stay open along with the drill holes?

Thanks

I just put a k&n rplacement filter on, ripped out the air box, and squeezed the heck out of the round clamp thingie so it would keep my filter on, its definitely louder now, gas mileage got a bit better, i dont know about hp, i still lose to minivans,( not that it matters, it isn't a speed demon anyways)

I SORTA did this on my old 89 Ranger 4x4 after I wrecked the front end. The old airbox 'exploded' and there was just a piece of the top left. I went to a speed shop for a K&N filter, and they gave me one off a 93-97 Camaro / Firebird LT-1. Its a cone/oval filter, and screwed right over the existing air intake stock hose.

It was alot louder for sure, and made a cool 'sucking' sound from under the hood when I hit it....all from a 2.9L V-6 too.....lol. :p

Anyhows, onto MY application - 99 xlt 5.0 - what's the best intake that'll increase some mileage, AND help the intake breathe to make a better exhaust note ?
