So the wife spilled some coffee in the drink holder, enough that it was about an inch deep. The light on the holder failed right then. Apparently they didnt design the drink holder to tolerate fluids. Or, its total coincidence. You decide.

Thanks for the warning. Was wondering about that myself.

Wow that is nuts
glad they took care of that for you

I'm also worried about spilling a drink on the console drive control selector knob and all the other buttons next to the cupholders! I drink cold brew coffee which would be a sticky mess to clean up!! **CRINGE**

Wonder if painting a clear coat around it would help seal it at least for a while until it could be cleaned out :/ ouch, seems like a poor design for sure...

I believe this thread is the first of its kind in both the 5th and 6th gen Explorers this issue. Granted the earlier 5th gens had the "ring" at the top but many also had the TMS control on the console as well without any issues.

I think I'd try liquid bandage. It will seal yet stay flexible when dry. Otoh, that is one reason I never use those damn snap-on lids. If I get coffee at the drive-thru, I immediately transfer it to a screw-on lid cup.

What was the part number for the replacement?

I'm guessing this is directed at AdrenlineJunky. FYI, he was last seen here on January 19, 2021. The part for the 2020 Explorer may not be the same as for your 2017.

Sorry need to update my info. I have a 22 ST now. Ford didn’t install the led ambient lighting. Looking to see if that was an install mishap or if I can at least get it installed.

If Ford didn't install it then I'm guessing you didn't order the optional package then. ;)
I haven't checked just now but I don't believe the aftermarket LED Ambient Lighting option is available anymore. I think this came up before.

I have the 401a package that includes it. I have ambient lighting everywhere else.

I suppose we will have to wait and see if any other member with the same package has the same setup. Perhaps there was a change for the 2022 model. :dunno:

another reason i freak out when they hand me a cup covered in soda at the drive through window and i have to clean it off myself before putting it in the cup holder

Perhaps Ford ran out of components like they did with so many other "minor" items like the deletion of the 2nd rear differential bolt:banghead:

As someone that used to work in drive thrus.... I make them wipe it off before I take it. It is their damn job...

We have spilled in our vehicles before and not had this issue. We even had our moon roof leak in our 20 that filled the cup holder up with water and didn't have any issues.
