A buddy told me, that several people told him to drive inreverse for about 10-20 feet after you disengauge wheel drive. This dosen't make any sense to me. is it true?
While I've got you here, I want rear disk brakes. I know you can swap the rear end from a second gen. are there any with about a 4.10 gear stock? or at least a limited slip...
thanks

oh yeah, it's a 92 with a manual and auto hubs.

Yes Sir....!!

You have to drive a couple of feet in reverse, you ´ll hear a clicking sound, and that´s because wheel lock hubs are released.
Have a nice day.

Thanks mike.

Uh, there is a difference between the manual and auto hubs....Which ones do you have?

With manual hubs, you just turn the little thing and they are unlocked.

Auto hubs unlock the first time you REVERSE DIRECTION after you have pushed the button to release them.

So, if you were in Drive, and in 4x4 , and you push the button off, the light goes out, they will release when you back up.

If you are in Reverse when you disengage them, when you put it in Drive, they will release.....

They will stay locked if you just push the button and keep going in the same direction, just the driveshaft disengages from the tcase.....

Disengaging 4x4 by pushing the Dash Button puts the T-Case in 2 wheel drive (sending all power to the rear). The front axle and drive shaft will continue to spin unless the HUBS are unlocked. This additional drag on the system will cost you in fuel economy (a few mpg's?). As Crankcase said you need to reverse direction with Autohubs to unlock them. It's NO big deal if you don't, and plenty of people leave manual hubs locked during the winter. Unlocking your Hubs disconnects the wheels from the front axles. As such it saves some GAS by not having this additonal drag on the drive train.

Check out the thread in my See how cars work section. It shows an animated view of the various 4x4 components and what happens when you switch on 4x4.

As for your rear axle question, yes, there are 2nd Gen. rear axles with a stock 4.10 ratio. You might find a limited slip (they're more rare). I paid $240 (incl. tax) for the one I bought amonth ago. It was out of a '98 Ex with 80K miles. Although, the amount of mileage on the diff doesn't seems to have any affect on the price. Shop around.
