I only lock out OD when I know I'm about to pass someone and I don't want to have wait for the trans to downshift an extra gear. And yes, mine sees OD in the city quite often. Traffic moves between 40 and 55mph on most roads...even with traffic lights every 1/2 mile or so.
i have the overdrive button on the shifter...i never turn it off, I'd like to start doing this seeing as it helps tranny life, but what if i speed up on a backroad to 50 or something will it automatically turn it back on or do i have to push it back on ? And what if i go for awhile forgetting to turn it back on is that even worse then always driving with it on?
in town i allways turn the O/D off. its the first thing i do when i get into the truck. it makes it down shift faster. and also adds some engen(sp?) braking. i do this in both my truck a 4.0 and my dads 5.0.

You have to push the button again to turn it back on. It also resets when you shut off the engine, so it'll be on again next time you start it up. Leaving OD off shouldn't damage anything, since there's only a few hundred RPM difference at highway speeds.
I actually use all five gears in the city. You get unbelievable gas milage cruising at 45 in 5th gear at only 1200 RPMs and full lock up because it ain't got no stupid torque converter to slip
I was told by the mechanic @ ford that the reason that my '00 has had no flaws and looks brand new inside the tranny even with the 115k miles is because i run in the city with the OD off. Most of the ford employees recommend it.
because i had the same question because i had just bought a 94 automatic and i didnt know which to drive in od or d ..some are saying d and others say od.So far i have been driving it in d in the city! And have only taken it on the freeway once. So was concerned which to drive in! Anyone have a opinion about the automatics! Thanx!
The consensus here seems to be that drive is better is in the city. Personally I'd just rip that worthless A4LD outa there and put a M5OD in it's place. That way you wouldn't have to worry about all the problems that come with the autos.

On your 94 I don't think O/D kicks in until 40MPH or so, so if your driving all city (under 40MPH) then it shouldn't make any difference O/D or not because O/D will not come on till 40+ MPH. My 92 shifts into O/D at around 45 MPH. I just leave mine in O/D. However, if I have any kind of a load in my EX or when towing I leave it in D even up to the speed limit here 65 MPH. I just lose a few MPG leaving it in D at highway speeds but D is easier on the tranny when hauling or towing.
