Drivers Door Keyless Entry Keypad

My wife came home today and said that the keypad on the drivers side door used to unlock the doors was not working. The explorer is a 2002. I went out and tried it for myself and it in deed did not work. On thing each one of the buttons turned on the illumination. So I would think that the buttons are working. Any ideas on why this is not working would be appreciated.

Are you using the code associated with the alarm module, or a code that you programmed in? I've had issues with my own code not working, but the permanent code does. 'Course, mine doesn't work at all right now - haven't found the cause yet. Does pressing 7 & 9 lock the doors and arm the system? Does the remote still work?

Not meaning to sound dump but what is the C pillar. Also does anyone have the part number and price for this part. Would it make anything else go bad so that I can make sure that it is the problem or is that the only thing it does.

I think it lists for $200, $150 from fastparts and much less from Ped5stang (check the vendor forum), for a used module. The module is located behind the rear washer reservoir on my '97, but I think another thread covered this on later models, and it is basically behind the trim below the rear seatbelt anchor, I think. I'm still debugging mine, so I'm not sure what else can go bad. It connects to the main computer in the truck, but I'd be surprised if it had anything to do with that. Other than that it looks like a lot of wires and sensors. What I don't know is - what happens if one sensor fails? Can the system not arm, and could that be the problem? Depends how the sensor reports to the controller. If it's just an open, or a short, then it can't be smart enough to know if a sensor died, so I wouldn't think that, or a busted wire, would cause a problem. I just haven't gotten that far into it yet.

I had asked some questions in another post. Let us know if yours does ANYTHING other than lighting the keypad. I can arm mine by presing 7&9 keys together, but that's it so far. I can't get into the LEARN mode when I tried either.

The Vehicle Security Module controls a lot of stuff. Power locks, remote keyless entry, liftgate release, door ajar warning lamp, and keypad. Joe asked a good question above: Are you trying the factory keypad entry code or a code that you programed? It's been reported that the Security Module can 'forget' owner programed entry codes. If you don't know the factory entry code here is a thread that shows how to find it: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174603. If you're trying the factory code with no luck then the Security Module may be throwing a trouble code. Your Ford dealer will read error codes for about $80. Autozone will do it for free. Let us know what you find out.

If I remember correctly ford had a TSB on this. The number is
TSB #BC0012970201. CUSTOMERS REPORT INOPERABLE REMOTE ENTRY OR KEYLESS ENTRY FEATURE. THE CAUSE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A STATIC BUILD-UP ON THE SEAT THAT DAMAGES THE RAP MODULE. *JD (NHTSA ID #51010, JANUARY 02 1997) Now this is for a 1996 X However the symptoms sound the same. I cannot remember what the fix for it is. But I am sure that someone on the forum will. Best of luck
