I stopped at a red light yesterday and when the light turned green I gave the truck gas and it wouldn't move, after about 3 seconds it made a bang sound and thrusted forward.

The truck has 68k on it when it had approx 40k I had the rear differential replaced by the dealer under warranty. I don't know what this could be but my wife tells me that the truck does this very often. ( Its her daily driver) Anyone know what this could be due to? <2002 xlt >

A bang could be one of three things:

The differential as you stated. But if the differential spin for three seconds and finally thrusted forward, I think it would pretty much blow up.

The transfer case could be slipping into Neutral (bent shift fork or worn out shift-fork plastic pads). A transfer case freely spinning for three seconds and finally catching gear is also just as damaging.

Or the transmission. I don't know much about the transmission so I'll leave this one to the experts. It could be that its just low on fluid and the hydraulic pressure isnt building up until it reaches higher RPMs.

I dont think its the driveshaft because the driveshaft cant spin for three seconds and finally catch.

If this happens frequently, try not to drive the vehicle until you get this taken care of because anything in the driveline spinning up for three seconds and finally catching will do quite a damage.
