That would be a CV joint... As far as I know, it's not serviceable, so you could be replacing the driveshaft.

I know a local shop that can replace the CV head on the driveshaft... They apparently rebuild the shaft using a new head and a new u-joint for $200. www.shaftmasters.com.

Good luck!

not the half shaft up front. the actual driveline coming from the transfercase to the front pumpkin. This looks different than the cv joints I've seen before if that's what it is. Why wouldn't ford just use a u joint like everywhere else?? always gotta make it difficult...

Yes, it's a CV joint. It looks different, but it's still a CV joint (think half of a front halfshaft). They had u-joints (or in some cases, a double-cardan joint) there on the 95-96s and the first-gens, but apparently they went to the CV to reduce weight, as well as reduce the NVH of the front drivetrain since it turns all the time on the 97-ups.

I've heard of some people on this board going back to a U-jointed shaft and an adapter plate, but I've also heard some have experienced vibration issues too.

Stock is good enough for me...

I got that shaft back together. prolly need a replacement soon but I'm keeping my fingers crossed..
