I have a 97 XLT w/control trac. When I let off the accelerator to depress the brake pedal I hear a grinding noise, like when you miss a gear in a manual tranny (i have automatic). Any ideas what this could be? Wondering if its the transfer case because the truck drives smooth, shifts fine ( a little harder than usual) but then the grind as you slow down. Any thoughts? Your help is appreciated.

Check rear pinion bearing and brakes -- over 'n out!

From what I have seen when I worked in an private garage you probably have a worn out shift fork & gear in the t-case.
