dropped in a 02 ranger engine in my explorer but it dies..

ill start it and it will runn for like 10 seconds..than it goes to a really really low idle and stutters and putters and sloooooowly dies..batty light is on but my alternator is good. idk what it might be..

i still have not hooked up the cat with the 02 sensor. could that be and part of the problem?
