well today i went price looking for dual exhaust. i got an estamate of $450 for custom dual exhaust 2.25" all the way through Flowmasters... the guy said that i shouldnt go any bigger because its going to be dual exhaust all the way through and if it was bigger i might run in to some problems. could i get anything bigger and not have any problems? or is 2.25" big enough?

oh and i dont know didly about exhaust for this SUV

EDIT: its a '97 EB 5.0

for a 4.0 or 5.0?

ok ive edited the main post and i think everything needed is there.

Does he want to do true dual (2 separate mufflers)? Or a dual in/ dual out muffer? I have true duals on my 5.0 mounty with 2.5'' tubign back on both sides and i only lost very minimal torque but massive high end power was gained

well which would be better? true dual or dual in dual out? i was thinking of true dual. but i wasnt sure if i should go with 2.25 or something bigger, 3" max. is yours 2.5" all the way through?

Saleen,
what did you end up going with? i've been looking at going with a (single) flowmaster 50 muffler with dual pipes coming out the rear. i have a '97 EB 5.0 as well.
question: if i only have one cat (don't know if i have one or two) would i still need a dual in/ dual out muffler, or would i go single in/ dual out? i don't know much about exhaust at all.

Go talk with the guys at the speed merchant on Lincoln ave. also, they do most of the really good exhaust work in the area, would suggest magnaflows over flowmasters

Flowmaster 50's have a great sound. I have one on a 4.0 and it has a nice tone. Take a peek underneath your X, and if you have a dual inlet muffler stock, then get a dual inlet Flowmaster, and if it's a single, get a single. You'll save yourself some trouble by not dealing with special inlet pipes. 50 series comes in both single and dual inlets with dual outlets, so check your inlet on stock and order accordingly. The number of cats really doesn't matter, just the number of inlet pipes on your stock muffler.

well i havent gotten around to getting the exhaust becuase i wanted a laptop more, plus i wanted to break the $10k mark in my bank account. but as soon as i got the money now ill get it (i dont want to drop anywhere below $10k). but ISUBALLER im in the same boat as you, dont know didly about exhaust. i think ill go with the 2.5. im thinking of turboing my EX so bigger would be a bit better, dont have any plans soon for the turbo but id rather have that over a supercharger.

but for sure within the next month or 2 ill get my exhaust.

and SPINDLECONE ill check that out, nice to know that someone lives in my area.

well i went to Speed Merchant and found out that TRUE DUAL EXHAUST will not pass smog. but they said that they will do it, so all i have to do is find somone that will pass me even if it costs a few bucks.

In order to do a true dual, you gotta get rid of the cats, thats illegal, I seriously dougbt the speed merchant would do such a thing without you signing all sorts of wavers, such as off road only, have dealt with them for over 25 yrs, they know what is what.
Also you can get a dual pipe out catback, is legal, all show, no go and more ristrictive than a single out catback
My edit: just a side note, have bought off smogers in the past, those days are over, be careful

couldnt you just have 1 cats installed on each of the exhausts? ive seen the cats for cars and its nothing big, i mean if you got a long enough streight in the exhaust it could fit, maybe i need to supply the cats for the setup, i think ill call them up or even go down there again and try to see how to make it smog legal. i really want dual side exhaust... but i doubt it being able to get the cats and mufflers on with that little distance traveled.

You cannot change anything above the termination of the cats, thats the law, in our state you are screwed bye the visual test.
Case in point, I had a twin turbo Gale banks 78 vette, LT1 built to the max, had 12 grand in the engine, cranked 470 HP, another 8 grand in suspension mods, in 84 the state changed the smog laws, if it passed made no diff, if it failed the visual, you are screwed, I challanged the state, hauled the car to Sacramento on a flatbed, had it tested at the main DMV facility, passed with flying colors, super clean car, open the hood, no way jose, I lost 20 grand on that program, do not dick with the smog laws in our state, you will lose, besides, what you want to do will noy gain much if anything perf wise

That sucks!! well i guess im back to the drawing board... looks like i must go to bigger exhaust with just plain ol' dual exhaust. that means ill lose the use of the spare tire...

all i need is to find a company that will make me 2 headers with turbo flanges, then ill be happy

As emeral would say, am happy happy than the smog gods will **** upon you, good luck

Wait. The V8s have a true dual exhaust up to the muffler, stock. There are 2 cats per bank, for a total of 4 cats. You can remove the current muffler and put two mufflers on their sides, and H bridge, and have true duals without even touching the cats. Go look under your truck!

Turbo'ing your X is big bucks - but a 5.0 would be a nice base. Manifolds ARE made for mustang apps, but there is NO ROOM in the engine bay. Maybe if you cut out your fenders, ditch your ABS, move the battery to the back...

I was under the impression we were talkin V6 all the way, my mistake, sorry

so the 5.0 explorer engine is the same as the 5.0 mustang engine? i was thinking it was, but wasnt 100% sure.

and as for turboing it, i was thinking of getting a custom hood rather than removing/relocating things. ill go look some time tomorrow or maybe even today.

and as for the exhaust, i saw the two banks, and wasnt sure what they were, thought they were both mufflers, but then thought that one had to be the cat because i didnt see it anywhere on the exhaust. so which is the cat? the first one right?

The 5.0 block is the same. Heads, cam, intake, front accessories (alt, a/c, ps), computer, are all different.

There are 4 cats, 1 muffler, 1 resonator in the exhaust system. Here is a pic Section525 took of a V8's cat system:

Hood clearance isn't your big problem with turbos - its width.

what is the best method of exhaust for the 5.0?
i am going to put on on the new torque monster headers for mine then do a single 2.5 cat back system with a series 50 flowmasta. it will be a dual 2" in muffler.
