I've been thinking lately, Since I have a little more undercarriage showing on the back of the Explorer because of the lift, two chrome pipe would jazz things up a bit. Has anybody gone put dual exhaust on the back of a 3rd gen? I know there's a lot going on back there with the suspension and all and was wondering if its even worth it to spend the money. Also, anybody got any suggestions on a good muffler to go with to get a nice bad ass sound without any rasp? Thanks in advance
It's a 4.0 btw...

I know somebody on here has, can't remember who. My plan is to do dual tips on each side. Like this:

I found this on google, its from here somewhere,

I wouldnt go that big, maybe like a 3 inch exit max. that looks like 3.5" but that what im thinking as far as the exit setup. Now the question is what muffler to get that perfect note? Flowmaster 50 suv or delta 40?

it can be done, but be prepared for a hefty price tag, dual pipes through the irs is some work.
get on youtube and check out the sound clips, that will be your best bet for finding what you like.
if you know somebody at an exhaust shop, or at least have a friendly shop in town, sometimes you can get them to let you slip a few different mufflers over your cut off pipe to get a feel for the sound, before its installed.

I was looking on YouTube but noticed a lot of inconsistency in the sound which could be a bad install or even a crappy camera. And as far as a freindly shop, me and "my guy" are on a $$$ and beer basis so I was expecting it to be high but not too high lol.

well assuming you have the 4.0

im rocking a FM DELTA 40... with 2.5'' pipe to a single 3'' tip, with no resonator...

here is a clip of my X when the exhaust was literally put on like 2 hrs prior to me recording it... then sound has changed for me since i now have a K&N Intake, and the muffler got burnt up an ( WORN IN ) per say...

1st clip... muffler only...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xteFO7WFzVc

2nd clip... CAT BACK without resonator right after install...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0ah6ZC4GPE

just to let you know for clip#2... rev = 2k then 3k then 4k then 5k RPM's

I noticed you ge a little rasp when you rev it, do you get that in gear too?

The question for the exhaust is how loud do you want it? Do you want to hear it when you rev/get on it(still quiet at cruise) or feel is shake the ground and everyone know's your coming?

Hmmmm, I'd like it to sound throaty at idle and when I'm really hitting it. But dint wantit to drone in overdrive or be too loud inside.

the rasp noise you hear is only when im reving the X while NOT MOVING...

plus now that i have a K&N intake, and the muffler is now burnt up pretty good inside, the sound has changed a bit from when the clip was done...

That makes sense, I noticed the rasp on all the trucks and my ol' Pontiac used to do the same thing, in gear it sounded great, in neutral it sounded terrible. How's the interior noise on the delta 40 caldwell?

Our FM shouldn't really get louder because there is nothing to burn out;) But I will say that it seems that mine has gotten a little louder over the last 3 years.

If you were to get a flowmaster muffler, I wouldn't go any lower than a 50 series and would probably go with a 70 series and make sure the exhaust runs all the way out the back. Remove the 3rd cat, get 2.5" exhaust and a 3" chrome tip like(or run duals). I can post a vid of my exhaust(3rd cat gone, FM 70 and single 2.5" pipe) but I have a V8 so it will be different.

Awdrocks has run dual tips through the rear bumper and Macknos94 plans on doing the same soon. You could PM awdrocks for pictures(looks sweet) or wait till Mack gets his done.

I'll check out what awdrocks has done, and thanks for the offer on the video but the 4.6 does sound a lot different. I gotta go over to my guy and see how much he wants to do the job before I decide on anything but all info has definitely helped!

That looks nice but i'm thinking bring em out the back

yeah same concept... are you carrying a spare now?

yeah but it needs to come off, it's too small

perfect!! haha well it can be done so cant wait to see pics of it! btw, it have a flowmaster 50 SUV and it sounds pretty mean when u step on it but quiet at idle

i got duals on my 01 sport and i still got the spare tire on mine

You have a solid rear axle and may have a little more "wiggle" room than us. But I'm sure I have seen a 3rd gen with duals and stock spare. Maybe it was Rocket5979 or someone?
