So sorry for the dumb newbie question..

In my 98' Explorer Sport 2WD (4.0 SOHC) if I am at a stand still on a incline and my truck is in 'D' if I take my foot off the brake I immediately start to roll back, the same happens if I am on a decline in 'R' ~ as soon I take my foot off the brake I immediately start roll forward?

Should this be happening?

Yup, past about a 7-10 deg incline that happens to me also, it's normal.

Welcome aboard.... there is no such thing as a dumb question.... ask away.

I always find that I never need my brake in these situations. Even on real steep hills, when I'm just sitting there - at a stop light or something - I don't apply the breaks and I don't roll back at all...it's always surprised me because it doesn't seem like it should do that....maybe it has something to do with the AWD?

mine used to roll back in my parking ramp here at school, but now it will crawl up the entire thing unless i hold it back with the brake. i think it has to do with the settings of the automatic relative to the amount of torque you have at very low rpm's. backing up though, is normal and doesn't mean that your x is damaged or anything, and it won't hurt it either.

actually if you put the car in D2 when you stop on a hill and it starts rolling it will automaticaly stop it from rolling, its a feature ford put in the explorer

Bentley, I will try it out.
However, what about when you are in reverse on a decline?

i dont anything will stop that, cause i went wheelin with my friend in his 88 S-10, and when he reversed on a decline, it rolled forward. any car ive driven has done that, its prob just somethin that happens you cant stop.

that happens on almost every car ive ever driven.

perfectly normal, perfectly healthy.

i owned a 2000 ranger 2wd (ya thats why I got rid of it being from wisconsin) and it didnt do that. However I had a 4 popper in there as well.
