dumb question... 97 sohc in a 2002?

I'm sorry for the dumb question... not sure where to put this. I'm trying to sell a 97 4.0 sohc from an explorer and I've got someone asking if this will work in their '02? It's california, needs to be smog legal.

I know the 97 didn't have pats and the 02 will... that's just wiring though. But the real question is are the casting #'s different on the motors between these years? The person asking, doesn't know enough to go check the casting #'s for me...

so I'm here to ask the exploder gods :D

I believe in California, you must put in the same year or newer engine. I remember reading it on here somewhere so don't quote me on it.

Yes, you are correct. But if the casting numbers are the same, or hell even if they're different, but all the 02 electronics hook up... nobody is going to know. ;)
