Just want to double check but the OEM Transfer Case for a 1997 Explorer is the Electric 4405 right (BW4405 F77)? I just posted a WTB in the For Sale section and wanted to make sure I was right...

yes.. that's the control trac version.

Good luck finding one, i posted the same thing a day before you did and haven't had any luck.

Jason, do you know the differences in the numbers for the 4405?

Cool. Well I found this auction site for parts and founs a couple 4405 t-cases for around $300.00 (http://www.goboom.com/auctions/). But they all say for 98-00 Explorers. Will these work in my 97 as well? Might be just what your looking for Josh. They had like 6 or 7 of them on their.

well 300 is a good price. I checked here locally and eveyone was wanting about 550. I'll check that link out.

That's why i was asking Jason about the differences. They have like 7 electric versions out there.

I'm hoping one of these online will work. I priced a new one on Ford Parts Network for like $1,100.00!!

Jason/anyone know whether a 98-00 4x4 (part time, electric shift) t-case will fit a 97? It is a Warner 4405...

Someone has to know whether a 98-00 4x4 (part time, electric shift) t-case will fit a 97 or not? It is a Warner 4405...

Josh, you check out that site?

I'm sure it will fit. I just don't know if the wiring is different. I'm thinking that a 97 and up is the same and the 95-96 are the different ones. I'd like to know 100% before i bid those. That's a cool site, i'll have to go back there again and look around when i've got some time.

Yeah, same here. Once I'm 100% I'm all over it! Took like 2 sec. to find on Yahoo.

I also found http://www.partrequest.com. You fill out a form requesting a part, give em 4 bucks and they send it out to all their subscribers (junkyards and such). The subscribers then email you back with the condition and price of the part. I'm trying it out just to see how well it works. I'll keep you updated to see if it was worth the 4 bucks or not.

Have you tried junkyarddog.com They seem to get good responses.

Hey Josh, did a little more research and found a magazine called Gears that had a Transfer Case ID Guide in their March 2002 issue. They had 2 t-case models (95 and up) for the second gen. Explorer/Mountaineer.

BW4404F: Used 1996 and up, Medium-duty, magnesium case, all wheel drive equipped with viscous coupling. (I'm assuming that this one is used on all the V8 AWD models).

BW4405F: Used 1995-1999. Electric shift, clutch pack driven torque transfer.

So if I'm reading this right, I can use a t-case from any 1995-1999 4.0 V6 4x4 and it should fit my X fine. Can anyone verify this for me?

By the way, did a part request on junkyarddog.com this morning.

Great job! Well i guess i'll go ahead and put a bid on one of those tcases. I need one cause i'm dying to go wheelin again! Another you can do it go out and look at the tag on your tcase. It's going to be a metal tag hanging off of it just like on the rear end. There will be a few series of numbers on there, i think it's the one in the upper corner toward the outside edge of the tag. The last 2 letters are the ones that are important i was told. Mine are CA, so i'll be looking for one of those. I have no idea what the other ones are, that's what i was hoping someone could tell me on here.

Well have I got the info for you!

The three model numbers for the 1997 Explorer t-cases are:

ID F57A - 7A195 - CA
ID F67A - 7A195 - RA
ID F77A - 7A195 - GA

Yeah, I was waiting for someone to say go out and look at your X. I don't have it back from the body shop yet. That's the only reason... :(

I'll see if I can find the article again real quick. They had a diagram for reading the Borg Warner Tag on the t-case...

Here it is in case you or anyone was wondering...

There ya go! That's what you need to look for, i've got the CA, but i wonder what the other ones are?

I think there are some more too. One guy told me there were 7 of the electronics. I know there is an AA also.

Yeah but I think the three above are the ones that will go on the 97 X. I bet the rest might be for the AWD V8 version...

If you want to put a 98 case in a 97, watch out for this problem:

VSS vs ABS sensor

Why is this so complicated?? I don't understand why their are different t-cases for the same year Explorer!

So what dogfriends link to that other post is saying, at least as far as different years go, a 97 t-case is the only one I'll be able to use in my X. Basically I can forget about using anything from the 95, 96, 98 and 99 like I previously stated above.

MY X has the extra radiator for the tranny fluid (tow package). Could something like that be a reason their are are three different t-cases for the 97? One for a basic 4x4, one for a 4x4 w/ the towing package, maybe different ones for the OHV and SOHC?? I'm going insane!
