Those are not so dumb. Here in Europe we seem to have a hybrid model. That is neither an xlt nor and eddie bauer. I would guess that yours looks like mind (see sig) apart from the lhd. As for the vin #s I have no idea perhaps someone else will.

Your VIN checks as exactly what you have, a 99 4d 4wd sohc.

1fmdu34e1xua92473.

1 = Made In America
F = Ford
M = Multipurpose Vehicle
D = 5000-6000lbs Gross Weight
U = Bronco II, Explorer, Mountaineer
34 = 4x4 Standard Explorer 4dr
E = 4.0L 6 cylinder SOHC
1 = Check Digit
X = 1999
U = Assembled at Louisville, KY Plant
a92473 = Your Vehicle's Sequential Serial Number

If your VIN had the X as the 8th digit, it would signify a 4.0 OHV instead of the SOHC.

In the pre-2000 Ex's you can not get the trim level from the VIN directly--it has to be cross-referenced to another database.

If it has the argent plastic trim around the wheel arches and by the front bumpers, it is an XLS (I think they also have vinyl on the backs of the seats). EB is easy to tell from XLT by the leather seats and beige trim on the outside, and Limited will be similar to the EB, without the beige trim (will be body colored).
