My 1998 4x4 has a high pitched noise comming from the front end. I recall having read about similar symptons being cured by an updated dust boot shield. When I mention this to the mechanic, he looks at me like I'm crazy. Did I dream about the dust boot shield update? Also, could this be another problem that is completely unrelated? I have been dealing with this for over two years and am very desperate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

More info. on the noise: It seems worse on very cold days and on humid days. Also, I can only hear it at speeds of 5 mph to 35 or 40 mph. The wheel bearings were replaced which did not help the problem.

Southtxexplorer, yes the hub seals are pronblem. Ford has new hub seals and dust shields for this exact problem, the part numbers are F87Z-3K070-AA for the hub seal and F57Z-1190-AA for the dust shield.

Thanks for the help!! Is this a repair that is better completed by the Dealership, or can any competent mechanic fix it?

YES!!!! Now I know where that damn noise is coming from. This site rocks!!
