Tommorow I am getting my E-brake assembly replaced with one from a 98 Explorer. The one that's currently in my Explorer is a little messed up. The handle broke off, and a spring came off too. I works fine, but I can't order a new handle and spring. I can only order an entire assembly, that's why is getting completely replaced.

Any ways, how big of a job is this? How much should I expect to pay for this? Not the assembly it self, but the labour? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanx.

can't you get one from a junk yard?

Well, yeah that's what I did. But does anyone know whether or not this is a big job? Can anyone give me a ball park figure as to how much I will have to pay to get this done?

Like I said, I putting one on from a 98 Explorer. I have a 97.

Thanx

if your going to pay a mechanic ask them how much per hour here its like 65-75 an hour then ask how long will it take ?ford has a book on how long things should take to do. im guessin a couple of hundred bucks
its just mechanical do it your self

Sorry it took me so long to reply people.

Ok, so this is what has happened so far. I picked up an E-brake assembly from a junk yard which belonged to a 1998 Explorer. I then brought the explorer to a mechanic so he could replace it with the one from the 98 explorer.

It turns out that the 1997 explorers use an E-brake with an automatic adjuster. Just my luck, the 98's don't, they use a different style of E-brake. Both E-brakes are similar. The mechanic said he could try to use the one out of the 98 Explorer, except he didn't know what the out come would be exactly. Furthermore, the cable that was attached to the 98 ebrake was a few inches longer than the cable which was attached to 97 ebrake assembly (he took the one out of my X for a side by side comparison). He reinstalled the old e-brake, and my wallet is down $70.00.

I just ordered/picked an e-brake assembly off of ford ( seeing as none of the junkyards had any off of a 97 explorer, and seeing to the fact that I am getting a little pissed off ;) ) The cost was a little steep ( $200.00). Now I just have to make an appointment to get this job done.
