what is the easiest way to access and change the vacum modulator on the transmission on 94 explorer?

There is two ways. Unbolt the converters and replace the gaskets on it when your done. (more money). reach on top of the trans and unbolt the old one, clean the area and place in the new one. Your most likely to be doing this blind so to speak.

Pull the front seats, plastic trim, center console, pull the carpet back, remove the access panel and reach in unbolt your old one, clean the area and put in the new one. Oh have to remove a heat shield from the converter before removing the modulator. I did mine this way about a month back.

Felt like the thing was drinking transmission fluid. Still have an unopened gallon in the back of my ex.

Hope this helps, There is more detailed information around here if you use the sites search feature.

thanks, husband will be doing this tomorrow. do you think the center counsel will have to come out? the hump is in front of it I don't want him to have to pull it if not necessary, also anything particular on pulling electric seats?

You don't have to remove the console if you could pull the carpet out of the way to get to the access panel. Be careful not to lose the pin in the modulator when you remove it. Use vaseline petroleum jelly to hold the pin in place when you install the new modulator. Use a wire brush to clean the bore. Clean the old fluid out of the vacuum line as well.

well my husband was very ill, so i had the pleasure (not) of removing kick panels, carpet and lossening center counsel (the back two bolts were under counsel) to change the vacum modulator. followed the advice got it back together and drove it. It seemed to slip a little going into 3rd figured we'll have to adjust this weekend. Got in to leave this am and it was doing what it did before, which is when it's cold it doesnt want to go into gear (any gear) after warming up it shifts fine? hmmm? any other ideas?

My new modulator was also an adjustable one but I guess it was already adjusted right. Everything seems to work fine. Other then the 4wd
