Electric 4x4 in 88 Ranger driving me INSANE!!!!! HELP!!!
Ok guys this is going to be long but please bare with me and see if you can lend a hand before i just drop my truck off a cliff!!!!! Initially i had a problem with my 4x4 when i pushed the button the 4x4 light lit up but there was no relay click and no 4x4. I think i tried the 4x4lo and it also lit but nothing else. From that point on i just rode around for awhile and both lights were always lit unless i pushed in the clutch then they would go out. I tested my shift control module under the dash and the red light did nothing. I assumed that was my problem and took it to my mechanic to be sure. He also said that it was the shift control box. Went to a junkyard and got one and they said it had tested good. It was a newer part number but supposedly cross referenced and would work with mine. Put it in and same thing nothing.....red light would not blink or light and no 4x4. I bought another shift control module off of Ebay that is the exact same part number as mine except for the beginngin numbers that signify year and model it was in. Once again nothing. Ic hecked for power to the box and it does have 12 volts where it is supposed to. I found this link which was very helpful
explorer 4x4 site]good info
I took off my motor and started to check an low and behold my bushing on the back of the gear was completely broken. I was so very happy because this is supposed to tell the computer the location of the transfer case and everyone on the site said it fixed theirs. Well i put a piece of vent tubing on it and also cleaned up the contacts on the motor put it all back together(i did this three to four times trying fuel line then vent tubing and other differences) put it back on the truck. When i started my truck the lights blinked at intial start up(i think they did that when i got it) then they went out i was very excited since this is finally soemthing different but of course i pushed the button and now i get nothing....no light no click no 4x4. I will also mention that when i had the motor off i tried to turn the transfer case manually to 4x4 but it would not point at 4hi but would land in between 4hi and 4lo mark. I trid to move and nothing was like i was in neutral. I was able to trun it to 4lo and it did work. I am at a loss here. I really don't feel like switching to manual hubs and transfer case as i don't have the time or money to do this. Is there anything else i could be missing??? Could it be that i have just been unlucky and getting bad shift control modules??? Anybody close to Delaware with a working truck willing to let me try and put my box in their truck and see if it works???
