Hi folks,
this is my first post to the list. I'm looking diligently for my next car, a 2006 Eddie Bauer. I really want all the toys, roof/nav/dvd, etc. I've found a few cars that have a roof and dvd but no nav. My question is, is it possible to replace the existing radio/cd player with a radio/cd player with navigation? I'm pretty handy with mechanical repairs and electrical stuff, could I do this myself or should a dealer do it? Any estimates on costs of a replacement unit if this is possible and installation at a dealer?

Paradoxically, if I find a vehicle with nav and dvd but no moon roof, how delicate an operation is it to have a roof installed with the existing dvd? It would seem the moon roof would need to ride over the dvd quite delicately.

Thank you for support!

you should be able to add a Ford Nav without any problem, you should have phase II plugs, which are grey sockets in the back on the radio.
. . . .aftermarket HU you would most likely lose the rear dvd, steering controls. They may make an adapter now? With the Moon roof and rear DVD there should be an extra bracket to mount the dvd too, i thought earlier models had a tsb on it as the overhead DVD would rattle without it, i'm not sure what they did in '05 but i would expect it to be the same.

Thanks! Any idea what the unit would cost? New would probably be high, but maybe used?

Go to crutchfield.com. They've got instructions on the install, the tools required, and a bunch of gps brands.

no idea, i used fleabay for my Audiophile system, i searched for six months saw them go from anywhere of 100-300 used/fixed/broken. I finally did find a scratched one out of an '03 Ex which was the similar to my '04 for $50. Note if they ship it without the 'shipping bracket and NOT in ship mode' it will arrive broken as mine did. But all i did was send it out to be fixed for $80 more and all is well.

First you need find radio part numbers you want, you might start with the one you currently have. Then I'd start with the dealer, if you can stop by and ask, nicely, politely etc . He might give you the part number and price. . . which you can google and search fleabay for, after you tell him you have to think about it and check with a relative . . .etc .etc. . .if the price is not to bad it will come with a warr if you bought it off a dealer; fleabay your on your own with that one.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info. So "yes" it can be done and probably not too expensive. Or I can just leave the sound system alone and get a Garmin <g>. I almost found my car today, but the dealer confused RED with burgundy... oh well, the hunt continues.

What you could do is get a portable because its way cheaper, then make a custom fiberglass enclosure for it that matches the color of your car. You could have it between your radio and the cup holders on your console in that little tray. I've seen it done before.
