Hello to fellow lovers of this'95 model Ford. I am experiencing problems with my electronic shift but still REALLY enjoy this vehicle. I take it places LOTS of other trucks dare not go!!!! What an incredible turning radius. Plus the strength of the suspension amazes me when I return to blacktop and the tire alignment and balance is perfect! By the way , I am a gold prospector and take my Ex. anywhere and every where loaded.
I am experiencing what seems to be pretty common...4x4 elec. shift probs.
Unit suddenly stopped working so I went with the option of replacing the shift motor with an after market unit rather give Ford close to $300.00 for something that probably costs them $30.00. After install....still no dash indications or shifting noises. Changed out the dash switch .no response. Checked all fuses and reset the computer. Nothing. I would really like to solve this on my own. This truck was never taken off road till I received it. It runs beautifully. At stop lights I keeping thinking it has stalled it runs so quiet and vibration free. I do not like thinking the after market unit was bad from the get go but am ready to rebuild the original Ford shift motor.

Any sound advice at this point would be greatly appreciated. I read some where there may be something back by the rear washer tank which may be involved....sounds a little strange..but I'm the first to admit mechanics is not my bag.

My schematics for a 95 are sketchy at best, and the schematics for a 96 are down at the moment... I'll update it when I can, but that being said...

The first place I'd be looking is at the fuses for the 4wd. There will be fuses that feed the GEM, fuses that feed the TOD Relay, and fuses that feed the transfer case clutch. Next, I'd look at the switch itself. There are four wires connected to the switch: One feeds from the IP lights, one grounds it, one feeds from teh GEM and one feeds back to the GEM. The switch is a variable resistor. I'd check the apropriate wire to see if it's getting power from the GEM. (Without the schematics, I can't tell you the colors... will update when I can)

Assuming the switch is good, The next place I'd look is at the GEM, checking for a short between the GEM and the switch.

If you're not getting a light, it's got nothing to do with the transfer case or motor. Does the light come on at start-up with the lamp test?

electric 1354 t case mod

Hi there, I had the exact problem also and tried the shifter motor rebuild (the security screws on the motor snaped off in the housing and couldnt drill them out properly so had to mcgyver them) shift motor was fine and is again. However still no 4x4while the motor was off I shifted it manually and it worked great(4 hi,4 lo and 2 hi) I checked all the wirring fuses, relays and it all seems good so I have put it down to the module in the rear drivers quarter panel.
I decided to make a manual adapter for the 1354 electric shift t case. first I tried putting power to the motor but was unsucessful in getting the timing exact for each possition on the t case (works but unless you can see the gear its hard to tell the position its in). So I was stumped here trying to come up with a shifting mechanism Had to be something strong enough to provide reliability and precise enough to feel the position as the gear was turned . After a few days I remembered that my 14 yr old son had broken the weed trimmer earlier this summer it was a homelite brand with the straight shaft and a gear type 45 degree angle at the end of it .I took the gear angle off the end and held it by the shift motor and started fabricating .
First took shift motor off t case and dismantled it again, took the motor inards out and the shift sensor apart there is a small plastic piece that inserts into the large gear and i removed that and the disc which attaches to that ,drilled a hole in the outer piece and attached the angle from the weedtrimmer there I grinded the spline of the gear thing to fit into the large flat gear (where the plastic possition sensor Piece was) I then slid the shaft of the weed trimmer onto the piece I added to the shift motor bent it several times to get into the cab in front of the console (I used an electrical conduit bender ) not wanting to cut a hole in my carpet until I was certain I would be happy with the position I stoped there and went looking for another trimmer for another shaft to bend to just the outside edge of the rocker. I cut the shaf tand the spedo cable like cable inside fashoned a ball onto the end of the cable drilled a hole for a set screw (to hold the twist knob onto the cable )and voala I now had a migshift manual shift 1354 tcase.Until I get the bends just rite so that the shaft doesent rub on the body I wont cut my carpet. I want to put a 2 or 3 inch body lift on my truck first then I will have more clearance for the bends in the conduit . But it works well though. As i turn the knob I can feel the selector click into place.
not the greatest but for under $50 and some spare time was worth it until I ffind a 1354 stock manual shift case and hardware (reasonably priced)

Freddie,

While I applaud your efforts to fix your truck, please note, he's asked specifically what he should do to troubleshoot his existing system, not what replacement options he has. The 44-05 in his truck does not use the shift motor to lock the t-case. The 44-05 in his truck works nothing like a 13-54. True, he *could*, with a fair amount of time, effort, and expense, replace his 44-05 with a 13-54, but it's hardly a plug-and-play affair, and requires cutting holes in the floor for the manual linkage. For the average person, it's not at all worth the effort until all other possible troubles with the original case have been investigated.

gijoecam,
Sorry for confusing the year I guess I have read so many posts that i wasent paying enough attention. I have been looking for other ideas for my 1354 conversion other than the swap of the oem manual shift and have read alot of posts since I have joined.
I'll read more thoroughly.
thanks

no more wondering about my electric shifter

Hello all...fixed my elec. shifter problem for good. Tore apart the original bad $300.00 Ford transfer motor and found the classic small plastic washer on the gear hub totally gone. I then made the decision to go manual. I removed the rebuilt motor but bolted it on the side to allow for the harness to still be connected. I then removed the gear from the Ford unit so I now have the perfect tool to reach under the truck and shift into 4wheel low while in neutral with the WELL WORKING emergency brake on. Works like a dream. I do the reverse operation when approaching black top. I'm a prospector so laying on the ground for the 15 second transfer is nothing but a joy.......a totally sure thing is always nice!
Thank you all for your concern and info.......the gold is good in Arizona by the way!

All the Best....Kirk
