electrical gremlin

I have a 2007 sport trac and the last 3 years I've had a weird gremlin, I would get up for work and the truck is dead. a quick jump and everything is fine for about 6 to 8 months then it does it again (bought 3 batteries in 3 years because of it). when I try to start it I hear a little clicking which sound like it's in the steering column, no crank or even the door open ring tone. has anyone had this or know anything about it? any info would help. this just happened when my son needed my truck on Friday, after I drove it to work all week and it was fine, he said the clicking sounded like something didn't finish its cycle and is stuck trying to complete the cycle, like door lock ( click...click...click ) or maybe the column lock never locked all the way in. anyone?

These vehicles have a known problem with the ignition switch /lock cylinder. By chance, did you rattle the key around a little while it was in the lock cylinder?(move it up/down/side to side ) If you have not, try it and see if it recreates your problem.
