Shortly after I bought my 91 my electronic 4x4 switch would only engage in high range, now it won't engage at all. I checked the wiring to the switch and there's no problem there nice big connector is hooked up. It's gonna be winter soon and I'll be needing it. Any ideas?

Do a search for cleaning the shift motor. It's a pretty common problem, the shift motor just gets dirty (i'm supposing) screws the contact between the brushes and commutator. You can also use a pair of plyers (when the shift motor is out) to manually engage the x-case. There are lots of threads on how to do this.

Good luck

cool i'l do a web search for pix thanx, I hope that's it.

thanx I found this site and the info was great, I guess I have Sunday afternoon planned Dead Link Removed

I had a similar problem with my 93 Ranger. Just took off the shift motor and tapped it a few times with a rubber mallet, put it back on and it worked fine. I have had to do this twice. I think it happens when you don't use 4x4 for a while and it sorta 'freezes' up. I engage my at least once a month for a few minutes and haven't had the problem again in over two years.

Thanx maddog, I haven't had a chance to get to it this week, mid-terms......maybe this weekend, it's starting to snow on mt baker early this year so I better get on it. Doesn't sound to tough.
