Hello, this is me, saying hi to all of you. Just out of curiousity does anyone else have just a STOCK explorer, you know, one that they haven't modified at all? the only change I've made in mine is a grill guard on the front and a cd player in the dash. But then again, mine came FULLY loaded. outfitted with the best **** they had in '94. advanced boise stereo system, bass boosters in the speakers, you name it. But at the same time, I was wondering about these "flower thingies". exactly what are you talking about, and what do they do? I've gathered they add to your horse power which, to me, sounds good. this truck of mine has 165k miles on it. Its pretty much been through hell. see, I live in SD, where it snows... A LOT. and well, while my friends sit inside, I go out and play. But I think I could have a little more fun with a little more horsepower, and I was wondering how you people obtained it, and how noticeable a difference it makes in performance. also, I was wondering if anyone here could tell me the easiest way to change the color? See, I bought it used, and it's original color was purple. I'm all for original, you know, keeping things simple, however, purple's really not my style. So if anyone here could help me with finding out which tools are best for this, I'd really be grateful. Thanks.

welcome to the site! unless you have a compresser, spray gun, primer, paint and clearcoat, then don't attempt to do it yourself. esp if you are this new in the game. it sounds a lot easier than it is. you really need the right tools and to "bake" the finish on in an oven(which i doubt you would have access to) painting is really not a job an amateur should attempt. as for performance, my first step would to add a new intake from Kurtz Kustomz (www.kustomz.com) they will run about $100, and at least for my first generation explorer (that's explorers made from 91-94) it made a HUGE difference since in the 1st gens, the stock airbox is VERY restrictive, so adding an intake increases horsepower and fuel economy. it took me about 10 mins to install, so its really not that hard. next step would be an apten chip and then maybe a new exhaust setup to get started with. do a search for "apten", "kkm", and "flowmaster" for more info on these.
also, i would try performing a "complete" tune up - this would include the following:
a)oil change
b) air filter change (not neccasary if getting a new intake)
c)oil filter change
d)fuel filter change (depending on mileage of vehicle - only do if 100k+)
e)transmission flush and fluid change
f)differential fluid change
g)and MOST important(IMHO) seafoam the engine - it will restore a lot of lost performance that is due to crud built up inside of the engine. it might smoke like no other for a few minutes, but once its done, get ready to notice a HUGE difference in performance.

good luck with all of this, and once again welcome to the board!

oh yea, we got the tools. my dad and all his brothers and his dad all know how to paint vehicles and fix vehicles since my grandpa is a mechanic. yeah, im bout to get an oil change this week, as well as a fuel filter change. where can i pick up one of these seafoam things? that sounds really nice. anyway, thx for the advice. Yeah, im totally with you on the first generation. mines a '94. the last of the best years. Im sorry for any offense any of you other splorer owners might feel for the following comments im about to make, but the new explorers, or suvs in general for that matter are totally becoming minivans. the front ends are being sloped and kicked in, the bodies are being made wider so the trucks look pregnant. it's ugly. They took a rugged beast and made it a luxurious station wagon. WHY?!! that's the difference between the ford explorer and the chevy blazer. blazers are nice, smooth riding pieces of **** that have tvs and all kinds of nice stuff for your family road trips. the explorer is a beast made for climbing over the roughest terrain, going in and out of ditches like they're your own backyard, squashin' animals and terrin' **** up. That's what explorers look like they were made to do and so that's what they do. Blazers are more rounded than explorers. I hate blazers! i like suburbans, and i love camaros. But i say #### you to all blazers older than 88. not the owners, tho. i understand. the blazer is the poor mans bronco/explorer.

i think you might have a jbl system and not a bose if it was factory

yeah, youre right!

yeah, you're right! my dad said that before. He was saying that bose was a good way to go, but jbl made better speakers... yeah, i just got a bit confused. thanx for pointing that out. that would definitly explain the funny looks of disbelief i often get for claiming its a bose system. thx again. why did everyone else let me be retarded?

The sea foam is a product that you put in your block/fuel/intake and it is supposed to remove crude from inside your engine. You can get it at napa i think. When you use it if you get it MAKE SURE YOU READ THE INSTUCTIONS CAREFULLY. When using through the intake you can hydrolocked your engine if you feed too much in at a time (not really good for em') From what I have heard it is thought highly of in regards to cleaning the engine. You can use it to decrudify hoses like Power Brake booster hoses and the like
