The Haynes manual mentions marking the flywheel with the crank before taking it off. I didn't, but I also plan to install a new flywheel so it wouldn't have mattered.

Are these 4.0's balanced with the flywheel? If so, how have you installed it and balanced it?

The crank and flywheel are balanced in production, no idea if Ford balanced them as an assembly or the whole engine. The 4.0L OHv isn't as smooth as many modern engines, so I'd guess you could probably improve on it if you set out to balance the engine.

You can probably install a new flywheel in any position, but it wouldn't have been a bad idea to note the position of the balance weights on the old flywheel and install the new one with the balance weights in about the same position.

Thx for the info!
