Year, Model & Trim Level
2002 Explorer 4.0 EB
I just recently acquired a 2002 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0L 4x2 and I am in desperate need of a complete engine assembly. I have been looking for a replacement engine and it appears to that 4x2 and 4x4 models have different engine codes or at least according to ebay they are different engines. A friend of mine told me the only difference is that the 4x4 models had a balance shaft and the 4x2 models do not.

I am pretty mechanically inclined so I'm not worried about pulling parts from the old motor and swapping them onto the new one. What I need to know is if I can use an engine from either a 4x4 model or a Sport Trac? I understand that some are Flex Fuel and some are gas, so I'm sure that makes a difference too.

Is there anyone here that knows which years/models I can pull from to get a good long block? I can swap the rest of the parts, so I just need to know which engines will fit easily. Thanks in advance.

any sohc engine will work, just swap all your fuel injectors, fuel rail, intake manifold and thermostat sensor. make sure you use the spark plugs for the year engine you put in. ad not the year of the truck.

the harmonic balancer, crank sensor, cam sensor, oil press, knock sensor, all are the same.

I have 2003 with 8th letter K vin and put in 2010 8th letter e vin, works great. don't worry about the balance shaft, most people take them out.
