I have a 2000 Explorer V8 XLT.
While cruising down the highway in rush hour traffic yesterday
morning, the engine just completely shut down on me. I had to coast
through traffic to get of to the side of the road. When I tried to
restart it, the engine turned over for about 1/2 a second and then
shut down immediately, no rough idle. Also, I still had electrical
power, it's just the engine that would run for me.
Once I got it towed to the dealership, the tow truck driver tried to
start it and got the same response. He then turned the key a second
time and hit the gas really hard immediately. The engine revved up
for him and he was able to back it up a few feet.
Now, once the mechanic got in it and turned the key, it started right
up for him, no problem! He was then able to drive it around the
dealership for awhile without any problems. They ran some tests, and
also drove it on the highway for awhile and still no problems.
So, they haven't been able to duplicate what happened to me, and I
have a feeling that they won't be able to. I'm being told from
someone else that maybe the fuel filter was clogged and when the tow
truck driver hit the gas really hard, it cleared it out, so now there
isn't a problem anymore.
I don't like hearing the dealership say "we can't figure it out". I
could have been in a serious accident, but was lucky in that respect.
I'm just trying to figure out what could have caused this, and if it
can't be duplicated, should I get any parts replaced, or whatever.
Any thoughts or comments on this would be much appreciated.
