Hey wise peeps - advice?
I have a 2008 Mountaineer AWD V8.
Today - the car died in the neighborhood when my wife was driving home (she coasted into the driveway) She was probably idling, or close to idle - she didn't even realize the engine died - she thought it was a power steering problem - lol).
The car restarted with a slight clatter (valvetrain - I thought, but only a second or so, right at startup) & died a second time.
Then, restarted normally & ran fine (idling in the driveway).
An hour later, I took the car on a test drive around the neighborhood - no issues - it seems fine.

When the car died - it did not throw a code (I checked with my scanner) and after test - still no code.

Key Facts:
108k miles.
I replaced the fuel pump and filter with Motorcraft parts - last summer I believe (fairly recent - probably less than 10k miles since that)
Oil is synthetic, and looks fine.
Coolant is fine (full) vehicle is running at normal operating temp.
I replaced the water pump (also MotorCraft) very recently, because the o-ring failed -- it was leaking - I probably could have just replaced the o-ring, but I replaced the entire WP, belt, and t-stat (I put a high-flow 170 degree t-stat in it because they were on sale at RockAuto, and its friggin hot in Houston most of the time). The operating temp did drop a bit on the gauge - FYI, So the coolant is new, as well.

The spark plugs and coils are original & have never been touched, I could replace those, but I suspect an issue with either a coil or a plug would throw a code.

Everything seems fine -- The only thing I could think of is that the air filter is dirty, but I don't really think that would kill the motor.
Also, I have an extra fuel filter (somehow I accidentally bought 2), so I thought about changing that again, just to be sure that wasn't an issue.

Any suggestions? My wife is afraid to drive it & wants to drive my Lightning to pick the kids up - and that scares me,,, LOL

I would suspect the ECM. Not sure how to prove it though one way or another.

EGR good? MAF good? Loss of air flow or fuel could cause engine dying then starting rough

Also try the freeze frame feature if you have it on your scanner. May not be available if no code though
