Hi everyone, I recently bought my 4.0 07 XLT sport track, 4x4, at the beginning of January. 3 grand cash for it at 155k miles seemed like a good deal.

I was upgrading from my 07 ranger 2.3 that I put through hell and did a load of work to, so I figured this truck would probably need a bit of TLC as well.

Christ alive was I wrong. Bought it and within a month I had already replaced the main driveshaft, (which went on a commute to work, leaving me stranded) wheel bearings, front struts and coilovers, the goddamn transfer case, ball joints and a full transmission flush and fluid replacement. Whoever owned it before me had definitely put it through hell and never bothered to put time or money into it. Also, new tires, because the front camber was so goddamn bad it ran them down to nothing.

Anyways, now, I'm experiencing a myriad of new issues. For a while, the engine would slam (I mean slam, scarier than hell) anytime I would use the actual gas pedal, but run fine using cruise control to accelerate. Now, that problem seems to have gone away, somehow, but the engine feels weak, if that makes any sense. Doesn't sound right, almost like a wheezing or whining unless you give it gas, then when the rpms settle on upshift down it goes back to making the noise.

Has not thrown a single code in the entire time I've owned it and the scanner doesn't even bring up anything pending.
Also has a rough idle that shakes the whole truck at a stop, pretty palpably. Thing also clunks pretty audibly when I put it in reverse.

Buddy of mine thinks it's somehow related to the anti-slip traction system putting strain on the front diff, but I don't think that's particularly likely.

Any ideas? I'm going to replace the spark plugs, air filter and clean the fuel injectors soon but if any of you have advice you could offer or similar problems, that would really be appreciated. Really like the truck, don't wanna give up on it just yet. Thanks

reverse clunk is on this one too, 330k no issues yet as far as it losing reverse (knock on wood) and by slam do you mean slam into gear?

No I mean it literally slams in the engine bay, like loudly clunking/slamming in a way that you can really feel. It's stopped doing it for now, but it is extremely strange.
