Engine Hesitation and Stalling

My 1992 Explorer developed a problem last weekend. Here's what it does. It tends to hesitate occasionally, even when driving at a constant speed on level roads. This hesitation can become severe when the vehicle is climbing a grade. It has even stalled while descending a grade. When any of these occur, the Check Engine light comes on. I'm looking for ideas on the possible causes of this problem and anyone with a similar experience. Thanks.

Anytime you see the CEL come on during normal operation, the first thing to do is pull codes. Only requires a paper clip. See www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html (if you don't have a voltmeter/test light, the codes are also output as flashes of the CEL using the same procedure).
