Engine light came on!

Today my orange engine light came on, there were no other symptoms. The engine and gearbox were both working fine but I thought I would take a look under the bonnet to see if anything obvious was wrong. I was checking header tank, brake fluid and steering fluid levels with the engine running when I noticed that the air con compressor was turning on and off at seemingly random intervals despite having the heater set to vents and feet.
Does anyone know if these 2 faults could be connected or what may be causing them? Thanks in advance.

You have to find out what the code numbers are.

I would need to research the strategy for the air compressor, but it's entirely possible that's a normal operation. They like to run the compressor a lot to help dry the air.

A/C compressor runs on every setting when it's above freezing, except floor only and vent only.

Thanks for the A/C info, that has answered a couple of questions. Today I scanned with a snap-on ethos scanner (nice having a friend that is snap-on dealer!) and it came up with p0171 too lean on bank 1 during last drive and p0174 too lean on bank 2 in the memory.
As a little background it is pretty cold here at the moment hovering around freezing all day and cold start in the mornings the engine hunts between near stall and 2000 rpm. It does not do this for very long, just a couple of minutes if left to warm up.
If anyone knows of any common faults that lead to these codes and cold start issues I would be very grateful for the help. We love this car and want it to be a shining example to all the Japanese SUV drivers.

Search for 'vacuum leak' and 'OOM12'. You likely have one or the other.
