check engine light came on. checked the code. translated to vacuum system leak. light went off. now my 4x4 wont lock in. i can fix it, i just cant find the right hoses. (i used to cross-terrain race a super-mod Chevy, so my next statement will be offensive to many on this site) but in true ford fashion, my engine bay is a jumbled mess of belts, hoses, wires and junk... can yall take some pictures of your 4.0s and show me where the vac hoses and pumps are?

anybody give me a hand?

thanks for the help yall  ima take it in soon anyways ill have um do it there.

It might be better for you to take a picture of your disconnected hose.

I doubt anyone has a picture with arrows and circles for every vacuum connection. Even the documented ones are confusing at best.

You know, before you get pissed, you might want to give a little mord info. If you have a SOHC enginr, I can't help yoi. Mine is an OHV engine, so therd is a difference in systems.

Please excuse typing errors. I am using a tablet, hate touch screen keyboard.

i been tryn to figure out what engine i have since i got the vehicle. got it from a second cousin and he didnt have much info on it. ive looked at it, no markings, my mechanic has looked at it and couldn't tell. the only thing i have left is to take it to the local ford dealer... but i didn't get it from them so just to fart on my hood theyd charge me, much less actually pop it and look at my engine block to just tell me a series of 3 to 4 letters... so that plan is out. so yall are really my only experts. what is the difference between an OHV and an SOHC?

i dont have a disconnected hose. id be able to find that pretty easily. i have a crack or a hole somewhere...

Look at your VIN #. If the 8th digit is an "E" it is a SOHC. If not it's an OHV.

The OHV engine looke just like any V designed engine. The upper intake manifold has 4.9 EFI molded into it. I believe the SOHC engine has SOHC molded into it.

Please excuse typing errors in above post. Should say 4.0 not 4.9.

i know i have aftermarket engine parts from the guy who owned it before me so ima try the vin# thing. where is the plate on a 97 ex xlt? under the hood, in the door or on the frame?

There's one on the drivers door pillar and one on the dash, lower drivers side where the dash meets the windshield. VIN should also be on your registration and insurance cards.

Although both are v6's that's where the similarities end. They both have different designs internally, use some different sensors, and both use different PCMs to control engine functions. The SOHC also has more HP.

ok. so looked on the windshield. found where the little black and white vin plate should be.... no plate... so i looked on the door. i got an X where the E should be and a 4.0 EFI on the manifold. so i have an OHV. now what?

Well I have the SOHC and am not very familiar with the OHV engines so I'm not much help to you. But now that we know which one you have maybe the OHV guys can help you with any problems that might be common or peculiar to that particular engine. However if it is a vacuum leak that's pretty common to most engines trouble shooting wise. With the engine running get a can of starting fluid and spray around the different vacuum hose connections, one at a time. If the engine idles up when you spray any of the hoses, thats where your leak is. That should at least help you narrow it down to start. You'll have to listen closely, as the idle won't change very much.

i tried that but im not familiar with fords. i think im overlooking a section of hose cause i havent been able to find i hole. so can any of the OHV guys tell me where it would most likely leak?

check engine light came on. checked the code. translated to vacuum system leak. light went off.

Did you get any specific DTC P0 numbers? Stored codes in the memory?
Many possible causes for system vacuum leaks, all guesswork right now.
