Don't know if I am experiencing a problem or not, but here goes the situation. 2004 4.0L 4x4 just so you know.

For the past almost two months now, the only real time my X gets out is on the weekends, driving from work to home and back. I have to travel over the mountains and through the weather, I use the OD button a lot to help control speed with the engine more then brakes. Also, because of the climbs, my X spends a lot of time in the 2500 to 3000 RPM range with the occasional runs up to 4000+ RPM. On my drive home Friday, about 20 miles from home, I though that my X was sounding different around 3000 RPM, a deeper and slightly harsher engine sound then I am used to. The only real description that I can come up with for it is that the sound is almost like the engine is being restricted. I drove back to town earlier today and all seemed fine, then drove back to work tonight but was paranoid that something was wrong, I turned the radio off with every little noise to listen (this included road noise, water splashing as it was raining/snowing, going over a bump, etc)

I "think" that I am also feeling a very slight vibration in the throttle peddle at the same time. All of the eledged symptoms that I "think" I am experiencing are only around the 3000 RPM range as far as I can tell and are not associated with any particular gear or speed. I took it up to 4000-4500 RPM and didn't notice anything.

I am hoping that all of this is just paranoia and is really nothing. Please advise.

Also, is there anyway for A4x4 to get stuck on?

Just an update, decided to take my paranoia to the rainy, dark outdoors and double check a few things. Airbox (at least lower part) is unrestricted, air filter is good and dry, coolant is good, oil levels are good, plug wires are all attached on both ends. I'll try to pull the plugs tomorrow to check them. Put the vehicle into Dealer Test mode and looked for anything that I could find...No DTC's, Idle is at 650-700 RPM (is that normal?), battery is running 13.6...Nothing that I could find there.

Any other thoughts?

awhile back i thought my trany was going out turned out to just be a fould spark plug and yes you can get stuck in 4x4 i got stuck in the 4x4 low i had to replace the motor on the transfer case

Thanks. I'm probably going to pull the plugs tomorrow and check them...if I have my tools with me. I don't know if I am in 4x4 or not. I haven't put it in 4x4 for a few weeks and I know that it came out just fine, but I'm wondering if my auto may have kicked in and not kicked out like it was supposed to, but it has been driving just fine as far as that goes.

jack up the front wheel and give it a spin if it spins it,s not locked in and if it dont then it b locked in 4x4
