engine overheated

Hello guys,

I need help.

I have 2005 eddie bauer explorer and had major problem. the cooling water mixed with the lubrication engine oil and turned into an emulsion. probably the cause was overheated engine. now my car is in the shop for engine overhaul.

Can anybody knowledgeable inform me what is the torgue required in the cylinder head bolts?

Tighten the LH cylinder head bolts in 6 stages in the sequence shown in Fig. 433.
Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).
Stage 3: Back out 1 full turn (360 degrees).
Stage 4: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
Stage 5: Tighten an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).
Stage 6: Tighten an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).

Tighten the RH cylinder head bolts in 6 stages in the sequence shown in Fig. 434.
Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).
Stage 3: Back out 1 full turn (360 degrees).
Stage 4: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
Stage 5: Tighten an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).
Stage 6: Tighten an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).

4.0L

Install the RH cylinder head. Install new 12-mm (0.48 in) bolts and tighten in the sequence shown in 2 stages.
Stage 1: Tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
Stage 2: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

Install 2 new 8-mm (0.32 in) head bolts. Tighten to 32 Nm
(24 lb-ft).

Tighten the 8 12-mm bolts in the sequence shown in 2 stages.
Stage 1: Tighten the bolts 90 degrees.
Stage 2: Tighten the bolts an additional 90 degrees.

Stage 1: Tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).

Install 2 new 8-mm bolts. Tighten to 32 Nm (24 lb-ft).

Thank you very much for your reply and help Number4. The fig. numbers you mentioned in your reply are not indicated/shown in the images you posted. anyhow, i will try to decipher and you are already a very big help.

Those bolts are all TTY, and you need to time those cams before you put the valve covers on.

I am not familiar with parts. May I know what you mean by TTY bolts? I may need a special tool to remove and install the cylinder head bolts. Do you know where I can buy these special tool. Thanks in advance for your help.

Torque to yield. If you remove them they have to be replaced. They are tightened to their maximum strengthen, actually stretching to the point just before they break. You need to replace them when you install the head. They run about 50 bucks a side on rockauto. Same goes for the bolt on the harmonic balancer, and the jackshaft sprockets.

You also need the OTC tool to time the 4.0l camshafts after you install the head. Have a look at 2000streetrod's helpful links for a play by play and tool and part list.

anybody who can help me on how to timing the camshaft. we have already refaced the cylinder head and in the process to assemble the engine. We do not have the OTC tool. is there someone who have an instruction from the manual about timing ? thanks in advance for your help

I've not done the timing on the V6 and most don't have it torn down as much as you do.
So I don't know if the Haynes manual has sufficient information as to what you are looking for.
Some local libraries have been known for having access to the Ford Shop manuals, you might check there.

Also, stop by your local Ford dealer and speak with the shop foreman. The one near me was willing to print the information out for me. They said they try to help those who like to do the work themselves.
